چکیده
Abstract. The outflow of supercooled Ice Shelf Water from the conjoined Ross and McMurdo ice shelf cavity augments fast thickness forms a thick sub-ice platelet layer in Sound. Here, we investigate whether CryoSat-2 satellite radar altimeter can consistently detect higher freeboard caused by thicker combined with buoyant forcing beneath. Freeboards obtained were compared 4 years drill-hole-measured sea freeboard, snow depth, thicknesses Sound November 2011, 2013, 2017 2018. spatial distribution concurred distributions ice-shelf-influenced layer. mean was 0.07–0.09 m over main path outflow, centre sound, relative to west east. Ice loss processes in the Seal Nunataks ice shelf region from satellite altimetry and imagery
The Seal Nunataks ice shelf (SNIS, ∼743 km in 2013) is an unofficial name for a remnant area between the former Larsen A and Larsen B ice shelves off the northeastern Antarctic Peninsula. Analyses using Landsat 7 ETM+ and Terra ASTER images from 2001 to 13 and ICESat altimetry from 2003 to 09 show it has retreated and thinned following the Larsen A (1995) and Larsen B (2002) disintegrations. De...
متن کاملThe Topography and Surface Characteristics of the Larsen Ice Shelf, Antarctica, Using Satellite Altimetry
A comprehensive survey of the Larsen Ice Shelf has been conducted using precise orbit and re tracked Seasat radar-altimeter data with editing of erroneous values resulting from intrumental artefacts. Contour maps of elevation and radar back-scatter (with absolute accuracies of I m and 2 dB, respectively) have been produced and it has also been possible to map rifts, grounding points, rough terr...
متن کاملIce Shelf Water plume flow beneath FilchnerRonne Ice Shelf, Antarctica
[1] A two-dimensional plume model is used to study the interaction between FilchnerRonne Ice Shelf, Antarctica and its underlying ocean cavity. Ice Shelf Water (ISW) plumes are initiated by the freshwater released from a melting ice shelf and, if they rise, may become supercooled and deposit marine ice due to the pressure increase in the in situ freezing temperature. The aim of this modeling st...
متن کاملIce-shelf buttressing and the stability of marine ice sheets
Ice-shelf buttressing and the stability of marinetype ice sheets are investigated numerically. Buttressing effects are analysed for a situation where a stable grounding line is located on a bed sloping upwards in the direction of flow. Such grounding-line positions are known to be unconditionally unstable in the absence of transverse flow variations. It is shown that ice-shelf buttressing can r...
متن کاملLaser altimetry sampling strategies over sea ice
With the conclusion of the science phase of the Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite (ICESat) mission in late 2009, and the planned launch of ICESat-2 in late 2015, NASA has recently established the IceBridge program to provide continuity between missions. A major goal of IceBridge is to obtain a sea-ice thickness time series via airborne surveys over the Arctic and Southern Oceans. Typicall...
